Robert Gilpin was the first associate hired upon Gilpin Givhan’s formation in 1983.
Outside of the law practice, Robert Gilpin serves as a member of the Board of Directors of the Montgomery Area Chamber of Commerce, heading its Incentive sub-committee as well as the I-65 Development Group and he serves on various local boards and church committees.
Robert Gilpin is active in the State Bar Association serving as an officer in the International Law Section of the Alabama State Bar Association.
Mr. Gilpin is also listed in The Best Lawyers in America.

Experience
Robert E. L. Gilpin is a member of the firm’s Business Organizations & Transactions, Taxation and Municipal & Public Financing practice groups.
Within his practice, Robert Gilpin has advised and consulted business and family leaders, economic development and other public officials. With over twenty-five years experience in a very broad based tax practice, he has represented manufacturers, developers, public entities, estates, trade associations, governments, regulators and individuals. Robert Gilpin regularly advises clients on matters of tax and business planning, acquisitions, financings, assessing environmental risks, contracting, joint ventures, transactions and operations, and is a frequent lecturer on matters concerning tax and business issues.
Robert Gilpin’s practice has included litigating tax cases, structuring tax incentives for exporters, negotiating major capital investment incentive contracts, acquiring and disposing of a significant number of businesses, assisting in the development of landfills, representing the Alabama House Ways and Means Committee with respect to rewriting the franchise tax laws, completing some of the first assessment backed financings in Alabama, forming the first captive insurance company in Alabama as well as tax and estate planning for individuals and companies.
